AGENTS OF CHAOS

Experience the Sound

When did you start DJing?

I started djing in 2015. Until then I was simply a music collector. I’m from a very remote village in rural Romania. I only discovered electronic music when I went to university in Amsterdam in 2009. It was not my plan ever to become a dj. I had a whole different career in mind. I wanted to become a TV-anchor. But when we went to student parties I noticed that I cared differently about the music than my friends did. I started to make friends with all the djs and began exchanging music we liked. At a point, my boyfriend had a dj equipment at home so I started to practice in secret when he wasn’t home and that’s how I started to dj. However, it took some years until I actually switched from my other life to doing music full-time.

What track changed everything for you? / What’s your biggest source of inspiration? (The one that made you say “this is it.”)

I still remember the moment, in 2013. I was biking on a rainy day in Amsterdam, listening to a set on Soundcloud. I stopped to wait at a red light and the track Colt from Dense & Pika came in. I was completely transfixed. I just wanted to go home and study this song. I feel this was the moment I transitioned from a listener to “I want to go deep into this thing.”

But my biggest source of inspiration is life, in general. For example, a big moment for me was traveling home for Christmas and seeing my 10 year old nice. She was dancing and jumping so much and invited us all to dance and sing with her on this dance song. That really impacted me. It made me want to create music that can create these kind of moments.

Describe your sound in 3 words (No pressure.)

Energetic, hard, soft.

One artist who’s always in your sets?

The past year the artist that I play every set is Mila Journée. Her productions are so different and versatile. It’s the artist I use to get the crowd crazy.

What’s your go-to outfit for a show? (Details, please.)

Definitely something comfortable. A few times I tried wearing a short skirt for my shows and I was busy the whole time adjusting my outfit because it would move when I jumped. The same thing happened when I wore a very tight top, it kept lifting up and it really distracted me from my performance. Since then I decided that no matter what I wear must be stage proof. I really like experimenting new looks and different sides of me especially as a performer but the clothes must to be comfortable.

Do you dress to blend in or stand out? (And why?)

I’m very tall with long blonde hair. This makes me want to keep a very minimal look and try to blend in. I’ve learned to be comfortable with my looks but I’m not someone who dresses eccentric or colourful. As a matter of fact, I wear a lot of black and sometimes white. I would say, I love to stand out through little details. For example, the way I pair things, sporty look with a classic bag, minimal look but with beautiful make up or accessories, oversize t-shirt with a short skit. My personal style is definitely, less is more.

What’s one non-negotiable before you hit the stage? (A ritual, a snack, a moment?)

I don’t really have a ritual. I think the closest would be that I pray. In my hotel room, while getting ready for the show, I ask God for a good show, that everything runs smoothly, that the crowd is very happy and that I feel connected. It really helps me and it always works.

What inspires your style off-stage?(Street, vintage, trends, whatever.)

My style off stage is all about being comfortable. I love street style. I think you can be sexy and comfortable. I love to wear sneakers and a short skirt or the combination baggy with tight.

What do you wish more people understood about being a DJ? (Give us the real talk.)

How much we care! I think djing can come across as super casual or very cool. Djs don’t just show up to the club, party and then go home. It’s our whole life. We care about every single person in crowd, we care if people are having fun, if we managed to make them feel good, if people enjoy. We notice everything. When things don’t go well, we suffer!

If your sound had a color, what would it be?(And why?)

For me, rather, every song has a color. Even when I play, I can see it. It depends on the song. For example, my song Gracias a la Vida is purple while Sem Parar which is my next release, is definitely a red.
